After 3 years time, just as the devil had promised, he returned for the young maiden.  She was sparkling clean and dressed in white, and drew a white circle around her with her chalk.

When the devil attempted to seize her, he could not enter the circle.  He was repelled and flung through the air, unable to reach the young maiden.

The devil was furious.  He said that she was too clean, and she must not be allowed to wash herself for 3 weeks, and then he would return, otherwise he would not be able to take her if she was too clean.

So the maiden did what she was commanded to do, she did not bathe herself, he clothes became tattered and her face became dirty and her hair was matted.  And just as promised, the devil re-appeared to take the maiden.
