After the devil switched the message to "Kill the Queen and her baby, and keep the eyes and tongue of the Queen as proof," the King's mother could not bear the thought of killing the young Queen.
So the Old Wise Mother strapped the baby to the Queen, and put a veil over her, so that they could disappear into the woods and make their escape. Β
The two women hugged and said their good-byes, and the Queen, The Handless Maiden, prepared to make her second descent into the Underworld Forest. Β
She began to wander into the biggest, wildest forest she had ever seen. Β There were no paths, so she had to fight her way through the overgrowth... Β After darkness fell upon the forest, her spirit guide, the same one that had led her to the pear orchard, appeared again, and guided her to a small inn, led by very kindly woodspeople.
Another maiden in a white gown took her into the inn, called her by her name, and laid the child down. Β
The Queen asked how the woman knew her name, and she replied, "we of the forest follow these matters. Β Now rest, my Queen."
